Summer Reading

Magic tricks

Our local library ended it's summer reading program with a magic show this week. The theme this summer was "Catch the Reading Bug!". So, lots of bugs were involved! Both girls were pretty lucky in that they won some prizes as well as receiving goody bags for completing their reading logs. I even got one as an adult reader even though I only finished one book this summer, The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, that my mom had given me. I really enjoyed it. It was historical fiction during the Middle ages. Lots of information about building cathedrals and the castes system during that time as well as the role that religion played in both the royaltys' as well as peasants' lives. The characters were interesting and fascinating. It was hard to put down.

The girls, of course, completed many books this summer! I don't think we even logged all of them. Violet is really enjoying the Amelia Notebooks as well as having read BFG by Roald Dahl again. She is also enjoying Greek Mythology, as am I! I loved Greek Mythology as a child and am enjoying reading the stories again and sharing them with the girls. Olivia has enjoyed many different types, mostly books we have at home. She enjoys hearing about Tarzan, Hercules, Peter Pan as well as the Mercer Mayer little critters books. The magician was really funny. Instead of the usual "Abra Cadabra", he asked the kids to say "Cha Ching Batta Bing". Must have been an East Coaster! He incorporated bugs into his show and gave some great bug facts as well. The girls had a great time and are looking forward to next year's program as well as continuing to enjoy books throughout the year.
